A friend encouraged me to give yoga in the mid 1990's on the basis that it develops mindfulness and helps one to fine peace in today's busy world. My first teacher was Glen Hudson (Turyana), who had trained with Kavi Yogiraj Mani Finger back in the late 60's and 70's and I loved her somewhat eclectic take on Integral Yoga. Her classes did indeed induce a sense of calm, her lessons on yoga philosophy were practical and had bearing on every day life. I was also a dedicated katate-ka at that stage and loved the chance to explore my body as well as the mind-body-spirit connection in a gentler environment. I continued to practice once weekly, with an on and off pranayama and meditation practice at home for many years, but the real turning point came in the month that I decided to dedicate myself to a daily practice - and I have never looked back! A whole new world opened up as I started to understand much of what I had been taught, read and heard but had not personally experienced. Being on the mat, in my body and out of my head brings me a subtle joy and peace. As my body has grown stronger and my practice has deepened, I have been able to move away from the obvious tension and strain that each asana brings, and have started to experience and understand something far more immense than I at first could imagine. Inspired by teachers such as Mel, I finally undertook the Yoga Alliance 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2011 with Yoga Warrior and am honoured to be able to share the joy and benefits that yoga brings with all on the path. Namaste.
