Deborah Bagg's New Year Workshops
January 9th & 10th 2010
Upside Down and Inside Out!
"New York is famous for its’ pretzels – weird shaped pieces of dough, hawked by dodgy street vendors – and I wondered as I tried to lunge, place my shoulder under my thigh and then reach behind my back for an improbable bind weather, contorted as I was, I could imitate a lowly pretzel!
You see, New York resident & Laughing Lotus yoga teacher, Deborah Bagg was in Jozi recently, where she led two workshops at the lovely Yoga Warrior in Johannesburg. Originally from South Africa, Deborah has lived in the USA for nine years. She still has the South African warmness, but it is tempered with the Big Apple energy. Self confessed “yoga-study jock” Clara Woodburn of Yoga Warrior regularly invites select overseas teachers in order to broaden her student’s horizons.
The invitation read “Baby, You Turn me Upside Down and Inside Out!” and boy, Deborah Bagg did just that! I had practiced a couple of times at the Laughing Lotus New York studio, so I was looking forward to a challenging session and I was not disappointed. The fire in my belly was soon matched by a burning sensation in the arms as we spent a blissful hour flowing through inversions and arm balances.
It didn’t take long to find my limits, and it took only a moment longer to realize that my limits are further than I had previously imagined. Sadly, the limits are still there – and when I reach them, I fall over!
The second session was an innovative vinyasa flow, exploring Shiva’s dance. The vinyasa was invigorating. So too was the time set aside for setting an intention for the year ahead, letting go of “that that does not serve you”, and reflecting on both intention and impediment through a deep shivasana."

Deborah Bagg's Profile
A native South African, Deborah’s love for yoga began on a trip to the island of Mauritius in 1996, where she discovered the magic of the body moving into stillness. Since then Deborah has studied a number of different styles of yoga beginning first with Sivananda Yoga in India and South Africa. Deborah eventually moved to Boulder, CO to obtain her Masters Degree in Somatic Psychology and Play Therapy from Naropa University. It was in Boulder where she discovered the profound teachings of Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga with Sofia Diaz, her life-long teacher. Through these years of intensive training with Sofia, Deborah understood the ecstatic, devotional and beautiful nature of what true heart opening meant. Yoga is a living experience, that naturally brings transformation and a sweet sensitivity to life. In 2006 Deborah completed her Vinyasa Teacher’s Training at Laughing Lotus Yoga Studio in Manhattan. Deborah is continuing her studies with Tara Glazier in the brilliant Anusara tradition.
Deborah challenges her students to confront comfort zones and their perceived limitations with compassion, discipline, and a sense of humor. Deborah’s classes are both creative and challenging, focusing on the outer body as an expression of the inner body. Deborah invites her students to stay present moment to moment in order to deepen his or her own understanding of the nature of Self. Each class is an opportunity to create spaciousness, skilled awareness and heart awakening.
